Cell (Eyes and Mirrors) 1989–93 Tate.
Parallel to my work Bourgeois developed her practice from sketches to sculpture often using objects associated with home. Through exploration of her work I started to create large sculptures inspired by own experiences. Her understanding of the physical interaction with mediums and its curative effect resonated with my intuitive need to create. Although the main driver of her art was her troubled childhood, Bourgeois’ creations are not literal to specific memories but a production of emotional responses to complex relationships. This resonated with my own practice and facilitated its development at a time of personal self-discovery.
